Yarn Bombing for Diabetes Awareness
DAP+ partnered with Bank Art Museum Moree (BAMM) for Yarn Bombing “the process of wrapping a tree in brightly coloured crochet and knitted scarves or ‘bombs’” to create the Diabetes Awareness Tree. The project aims to spark conversations about diabetes prevention and treatment while honouring the experiences of those affected.
The tree was intentionally installed on the Moree Hospital grounds, ensuring it is easily accessible to patients and visitors. This peaceful, colourful space gives the community an opportunity to pause, reflect, and unwind beneath its branches. The knitted and crocheted pieces, many of which travelled hundreds of kilometres to reach Moree, beautifully demonstrate the widespread support for the DAP+ initiative.
Exciting developments are underway for the Yarn Bombing Project, and community involvement is warmly encouraged. DAP+ partnered with BAMM and the Yarn Bombing team to create this vibrant installation—an effort that gained momentum well beyond Moree, extending as far as Newcastle.
Ahead of the installation, BAMM hosted a pop‑up yarning session in the garden to raise awareness of diabetes and its prevention. Participants shared and learned new stitches, techniques, and patterns, enjoyed a relaxed picnic setting, connected with others who share a passion for craft, and—true to the spirit of the event—had a yarn about diabetes awareness. The diversity of contributors and the energy of the gathering made the project a positive and uplifting experience for the Moree community.
